Security guard arrested for firing gun in Manila terminal

A 29-year-old security guard was arrested after allegedly firing a gun into the air and causing a disturbance at a bus terminal in Ermita, Manila, on Monday night, Aug. 31.

The suspect was identified as Carlo, a resident of Barangay 108, Tondo, Manila.

Police said personnel of the Lawton Police Community Precinct (PCP) were conducting a mobile patrol near the Multimodal Transportation Hub along Arroceros Street, Barangay 659-A, when a concerned citizen approached them and reported the disturbance at around 9:40 p.m.

Responding officers PSSg El-Ar Malonzo and PSSg Randy Quintal proceeded to the area to verify the report.

Upon arrival, police said they saw Carlo holding a firearm and instructed him to surrender it. He reportedly complied and was immediately arrested.

Police recovered a Shooter Guardian short firearm with serial number GD903161996, along with a magazine and a spent cartridge believed to have been fired from the weapon.

Carlo was unable to present documents authorizing him to possess or own the firearm, according to police.

He was brought to a hospital for a physical examination and underwent a paraffin test to check for possible gunpowder residue on his hands.

Police said Carlo was later taken to the Ermita Police Station, where they informed him of his constitutional rights and the nature of the allegations against him. He opted to remain silent.

Authorities are preparing charges for violation of Article 155 of the Revised Penal Code, or alarm and scandal, and Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

The case will be brought before the Manila Prosecutor’s Office for inquest proceedings.
