FedEx names new Philippines managing director

The local unit of logistics giant Federal Express Corp. (FedEx) has named seasoned executive Garrick Thompson as its new managing director, leading the company’s new phase of growth in the country.

Thompson succeeds Maribeth Espinosa, who has retired from the company following a three-decade stint, FedEx Philippines said in a statement on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

With nearly two decades of experience at FedEx, Thompson is returning to the Philippines after serving as managing director of FedEx Indonesia for more than five years.

Thompson previously held leadership roles at FedEx Philippines, including senior sales manager, where he helped drive revenue growth and expand the company’s customer base.

He is also a recipient of the Five Star Award, the company’s highest honor, which recognizes employees who demonstrate exceptional leadership, business impact, and commitment to teamwork.

In his new role, Thompson will lead a team of over 1,300 employees, with a focus on driving operational excellence, enhancing customer experience, and supporting local businesses in expanding their global reach through cross-border trade.

He will also oversee the Asia-Pacific trade facilitation center, which manages customs clearance, trade compliance, and cargo documentation across Asia-Pacific, the United States (US), Canada, and Europe.

As managing director, Thompson will also lead FedEx’s continued investment in the country, including the ongoing expansion of its Clark facility.

The company recently broke ground on its expansion project at Clark International Airport, which is expected to become a key transshipment gateway within FedEx’s Asia-Pacific network.

Spanning over 78,000 square meters (sqm), the new facility will feature upgraded handling and operational capabilities designed to support shipment flow reliability and service flexibility.

It will also strengthen the company’s ability to handle increased express, e-commerce, and freight shipments as cross-border trade continues to grow across the region.
