PNP orders tighter watch on vulnerable roads, bridges amid rains

After one bridge collapsed and another partially gave way in Tarlac City amid heavy rains, the Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered local police units to closely monitor and secure vulnerable roads and bridges. 
Agana Bridge collapsed on Aug. 29 while it was serving as an alternative route following the partial collapse of Aquino Bridge a day earlier.
The PNP said an SUV fell into the river during the Agana Bridge collapse. Four passengers remained missing, while one was rescued.
In a statement, the PNP said its personnel in Tarlac immediately secured the area and joined the search and rescue operations.
“Our personnel immediately responded to the incident, secured the area, coordinated with the other responding agencies, and assisted in the search and rescue operations. Our priority was to ensure public safety and help locate those who remain missing,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said.
Nartatez said the PNP would strengthen coordination among police commanders, local government units, and disaster response agencies as continuing rains affect roads, bridges, and other vulnerable areas.
“We will remind all police commanders to coordinate closely with their respective local government units and disaster-response agencies, particularly in securing bridges, roads and other areas affected by the continuing rains,” he said.
The PNP said the directive was in line with the orders of President Marcos and Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla to strengthen public safety measures and ensure a coordinated government response in areas affected by hazards and continuing rains.
Nartatez directed the Tarlac police to maintain security and crowd control around the collapsed bridge and continue participating in the search and rescue operations for the four missing passengers.
“Local police units should prioritize public safety, closely monitor vulnerable areas, immediately secure unsafe roads and bridges, and coordinate with local authorities so that appropriate measures can be taken without delay,” he said.
