Manila police check Mendiola security setup for Heroes' Day protests

The Manila Police District (MPD) inspected its security preparations at Mendiola, Manila, on Monday, Aug. 31, as various groups hold protests and activities for National Heroes Day.

MPD Chief Brig. Gen. Atty. Arnold C. Santiago personally led a simulation exercise and evaluation of the police deployment, barriers, and other security equipment in the area.

The activity was conducted pursuant to the directive of NCRPO Chief Brig. Gen.Christopher N. Abrahano to simulate the installation of metal and concrete barriers and container vans at seven strategic gates or entry points around Malacañang.

Police also monitored the area for possible developments involving protest groups.

Santiago inspected the barriers and strategic security points in Mendiola to assess the positioning of police personnel and equipment and ensure a prompt response to possible incidents.

The MPD said its security preparations would be carried out under the principle of maximum tolerance, with police tasked to maintain peace and order while respecting the public’s right to peaceful assembly and expression.

Police said the simulation and evaluation were intended to ensure the safety of protesters, police personnel, and other members of the public while preventing situations that could lead to confrontation or disorder.

The MPD said it would remain on alert and continue monitoring developments in the area throughout the National Heroes Day activities.
