Parañaque offers free doxycycline to residents exposed to floodwaters

Mayor Edwin Olivarez has directed health centers in all 16 barangays of Parañaque City to remain open on Sunday, August 30, to provide doxycycline prophylaxis to residents who waded through or walked in floodwaters amid continued rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat.
The city government said residents exposed to floodwaters may proceed to the nearest health center for proper assessment and guidance from health personnel on the appropriate use of doxycycline.
The preventive measure is intended to help reduce the risk of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that may be contracted through exposure to water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals.
Olivarez urged residents to prioritize their safety and avoid walking or wading through floodwaters whenever possible, particularly when they have cuts or open wounds.
Residents who have been exposed to floodwaters and later develop symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, or weakness were advised to seek immediate medical attention.
The city government continues to monitor the situation and provide health services to residents affected by the rains.
