Manila continues aid for over 1,000 evacuees as rains persist

The Manila city government continued providing food and other assistance to over 1,000 evacuees staying in evacuation centers on Sunday, August 30, as heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat persisted in the capital.

The Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW)distributed hot meals to evacuees to ensure their food needs were met while they temporarily remained in evacuation centers.

MDSW personnel also continued monitoring the condition of families who evacuated from flood-affected areas and assessing their immediate needs.

MDSW DirectorJay Dela Fuente visited evacuees at an evacuation center in Barangay 598, Damka Street, Sta. Mesa, Manila, to check on their condition and the assistance being provided.

The continued response came as Metro Manila remained under an Orange Rainfall Warning on Sunday due to the southwest monsoon.

The Manila city government also activated Code White, placing emergency and medical response teams on heightened readiness amid the inclement weather.

The city's localized heavy rainfall advisory was issued at 10:45 a.m. Sunday warned that Manila could experience heavy to intense rainfall that may last for two to three hours.

Residents were urged to remain alert for possible flash floods, avoid flooded and low-lying areas, and evacuate when necessary.

The MDSW said it would continue attending to the needs of evacuees and providing immediate assistance while they remain in temporary shelters.

Residents were also advised to monitor weather updates from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
