Jenny Barzaga wins Cavite 4th District special election

CAVITE – Dasmariñas City Mayor Jennifer “Jenny” Austria-Barzaga won the special election for representative of Cavite’s 4th District, securing the congressional seat vacated by her son, former Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga Jr.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed Jenny as the winner of the special election on Saturday, Aug. 29, after garnering 201,893 votes.
Former Dasmariñas Vice Mayor Raul Rex Mangubat placed second with 30,373 votes, followed by former councilor Jacinto Frani Jr. with 24,350.
The two other candidates, Marvin Dupal-ag and Leysander Ordenes, received 1,184 and 561 votes, respectively.
The Comelec recorded a 57.75 percent voter turnout, with 258,361 registered voters casting their ballots despite heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon. Voting hours were extended to 5 p.m. to give more residents a chance to vote amid the rains.

The special election was conducted to fill the vacancy left by Kiko Barzaga, who was expelled from the House of Representatives over disorderly behavior, conduct unbecoming of a member, and violations of the House’s Code of Conduct.
As Jenny assumes the congressional seat vacated by Kiko, her other son, Vice Mayor Elpidio “Third” Barzaga III, will succeed her as mayor.
