Valenzuela families evacuate as floods rise

Hundreds of families were forced to evacuate in Valenzuela City on Saturday, Aug. 29, as continuous rains caused flooding in several areas.

As of 4 p.m., the city government recorded 609 families staying in 17 evacuation centers across the city amid the Red Rainfall Warning over Metro Manila.
Valenzuela National High School in Barangay Marulas had the highest number of evacuees with 155 families, followed by Luis Francisco Elementary School in Barangay Veinte Reales with 98 families and Lingunan Elementary School with 68 families.
Other affected families sought shelter in evacuation centers in Veinte Reales, Malanday, Punturin, Balangkas, Pasolo, Lawang Bato, Dalandanan, Arkong Bato, Bagbaguin, Parada, Caruhatan, and Maysan.
The city government said hot meals and other assistance were being provided to evacuees with the help of barangay officials.
Residents in flood-prone areas were advised not to wait for floodwaters to rise further before evacuating and to coordinate with their barangays for assistance.
Meanwhile, several roads remained flooded as of 2:55 p.m.
Floodwaters along Monte Carlo Street in Lingunan reached around 43 inches or chest level, while P. Gregorio corner Trinidad Street recorded around 38 inches.
Lingunan Bridge and the Rubber Master area also recorded waist-deep flooding and were not passable to all types of vehicles.
Other impassable areas included Maxxima and Mayers in Lingunan, Wil Oil along Maysan Road, and portions of MacArthur Highway in Marulas.
Several sections of MacArthur Highway in Dalandanan were also not passable to light vehicles due to floodwaters reaching around 13 inches.
The local government said it continues to monitor flood and road conditions and urged residents to remain alert.
