The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Saturday, Aug. 29, warned that continued rains brought about by the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” may trigger lahars and muddy streamflows around Pinatubo and Taal volcanoes.
Phivolcs issued the advisory after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said monsoon rains would continue to affect western and central Luzon.
“This could generate volcanic sediment flows or lahars, muddy streamflows or muddy run-off in rivers and drainage areas on Pinatubo and Taal volcanoes,” Phivolcs said.
The agency urged communities in areas prone to lahars and related hazards to remain vigilant and prepared.
Phivolcs said prolonged and intense rainfall may generate non-eruption lahars along major rivers draining western Pinatubo, where significant deposits from the 1991 pyroclastic density currents remain.
It noted that lahars may occur along the upper and middle reaches of the Sto. Tomas-Marella and Bucao river systems and may transition into muddy streamflows and floods downstream. These may affect communities in San Marcelino, San Narciso, San Felipe, and Botolan in Zambales.
“Muddy streamflows may likewise be generated along the O’Donnell and Pasig-Potrero River systems draining the Pinatubo edifice to the north and southeast, respectively and affect downstream communities in Tarlac and Pampanga Provinces,” Phivolcs said.
Around Taal Volcano, prolonged and heavy rainfall may also generate muddy streamflows and runoff, particularly on the slopes west of Taal Lake, where thin deposits of remnant ash may be remobilized, the agency said.
Phivolcs said muddy streamflows and runoff may recur in previously affected communities in Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas.
“DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly advises the communities and local government units of the above identified areas of risk to continually monitor the storm conditions and take pre-emptive response measures for their safety,” the agency said.
