Marikina River reaches 2nd alarm; evacuation centers open

The Marikina City government raised the second alarm at the Marikina River after its water level rose to 16 meters on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 29, due to heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon.
Officials said the river reached 16 meters at 1:50 p.m., after climbing to 15 meters and triggering the first alarm at 12:17 p.m.
The rising water level prompted authorities to place riverside communities on heightened alert and prepare for possible evacuation.
Marikina Mayor Maan Teodoro announced that the city’s major evacuation centers are now open, with all Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) teams and operatives on standby.
Residents in affected areas were advised to closely monitor official advisories and follow instructions from local authorities, including evacuation orders if issued.
The local government said it continues to monitor the river’s water level and will issue updates as the Habagat brings heavy rains over the area.
A third alarm will be raised once the river’s water level reaches 18 meters, which will trigger forced evacuation protocols in all affected areas. (Freya Gan)
