The water level of La Mesa Dam in Quezon City rose to 79.81 meters on Saturday morning, Aug. 29, just 0.34 meters below its overflow elevation of 80.15 meters, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
In its hydrological dam situationer issued at 10 a.m., PAGASA said a further increase in the dam’s water level was expected due to continued rainfall.
“The water level of La Mesa Dam as of 10:00 AM is 79.81 m, which is still below its overflow elevation of 80.15 m,” PAGASA said.
“However, due to the observed 24-hour rainfall of 137.5 mm and a forecast 24-hour rainfall of above 60 mm, a further increase in the water level is expected.”
The weather bureau warned that excess floodwater would flow directly into the Tullahan River should the dam reach its overflow level.
The agency said low-lying areas that may be affected include Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome in Quezon City; Caloocan City; North Expressway and La Huerta Subdivision in Valenzuela City; and Malabon and Navotas.
“It should also be noted that aside from the outflow from the reservoir, continuous rainfall over the watershed may further increase the river water level,” PAGASA said.
Residents of the identified areas, particularly those living near riverbanks, were advised to take the necessary precautionary measures.
Earlier, PAGASA said the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” continued to affect Luzon and the Visayas.
