SM Investments taps gov't hazard data to assess property risks

SM Investments Corp., the listed holding company of the Sy family, has tapped the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) to assess the resilience of its properties against natural hazards.
SMIC Consultant and Head of Investor Relations and Sustainability Timothy Daniels signed a memorandum of agreement with PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol covering SM's use of GeoRiskPH, a government platform that aggregates information on natural hazards and related risks.
Under the agreement, SM will utilize GeoRiskPH tools—including HazardHunterPH Pro, GeoMapper PH, PlanSmart, and GeoAnalyticsPH—to assess potential hydrometeorological and geological hazards across its facilities, assets, and operational sites. The data will help SM make better-informed decisions regarding its properties, business continuity plans, and long-term investments.
"Partnerships like this with the private sector contribute significantly to helping us better understand the country's multifaceted needs regarding resilience," Dr. Bacolcol said. He added, "The government actively encourages more public-private partnerships of this nature, as integrating data-driven hazard tools into business operations is essential for sustainable national development and effective disaster risk reduction."
For SM, the partnership aligns with its long-term strategy of investing in resilient businesses and communities.
"SM has always taken a long-term view of its investments. Understanding the risks around our properties and operations helps us make better decisions about where and how we invest," Daniels said. "Working with DOST-PHIVOLCS gives us access to the country's scientific expertise and better information to strengthen our businesses and the communities we serve."
The initiative supports SM's broader approach to climate adaptation and disaster resilience. By incorporating data and methodologies from national scientific agencies into its planning, SM can better identify the physical risks facing its businesses and factor them into investment, asset management, and business continuity decisions.
The collaboration also highlights the critical role the private sector plays alongside the government in strengthening national disaster preparedness. As SM continues to expand nationwide, richer data on local hazards will allow the conglomerate to pursue growth while effectively managing risks to its operations and surrounding communities.
