PH batters bow to Venezuela, miss World Cup final berth

The Philippines missed a chance to qualify for the finals of next year's Women's Baseball World Cup after falling short against Venezuela, 0-10, in the final match of its group stage in Tainan, Taiwan on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The Philippines missed a chance to qualify for the finals of next year’s Women’s Baseball World Cup after falling short against Venezuela, 0-10, in the final match of its group stage in Tainan, Taiwan on Thursday, Aug. 29.

A few hours after absorbing a painful 2-8 defeat at the hands of host Chinese Taipei, the Nationals continued their struggle against the more experienced Venezuelans to finish the group stage with a 2-3 win-loss record.

They finished fourth behind unbeaten Japan (5-0), Venezuela (4-1) and Chinese Taipei (3-2), who claimed the top 3 slots allocated for next year’s finals in Rockford, Illinois.

The three qualified teams joined the United States, Australia and Canada, who clinched spots by finishing in the top 3 of their group stage held in Rockford last July.

Despite falling short of their goal, the Nationals still showed promise with victories over world No. 7 Cuba, 6-0, and Great Britain, 6-2, last Wednesday, Aug. 26.

They also lost to Japan, 0-3, and Chinese Taipei, 2-8.
