The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday, Aug. 28, that Philippine officials are still awaiting confirmation from Nepali authorities regarding a Filipino national reportedly missing following massive flash floods in northern Nepal.
DFA spokesperson Analyn Ratonel said the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi and the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Kathmandu, Nepal, are in “active coordination with local authorities and stand ready” to extend assistance to affected Filipinos.
“They are awaiting confirmation from Nepali authorities on a Filipino national who is reported missing,” Ratonel said.
Philippine officials are verifying reports that a Filipino traveler was among those reported missing after deadly flash floods struck areas near the Nepal-China border.
In an earlier statement, the DFA said the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi, which is mandated to represent the Philippines in Nepal, and the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Kathmandu were actively monitoring the situation in affected areas to determine whether Filipinos were among those affected by the disaster and to provide emergency rescue or assistance, if needed.
“The Embassy and the Consulate General are coordinating with Nepali authorities to determine whether there are affected Philippine nationals and provide emergency rescue or assistance,” the DFA said.
Latest data released by the Nepal Tourism Board on Aug. 27 showed that a Filipino traveler was among those listed as “missing” after flash floods swept through parts of the Himalayan region near the Nepal-China border.
The disaster unleashed torrents of mud, debris, and water across affected communities, prompting rescue and assessment operations as authorities worked to determine the full extent of the damage and casualties.
Approximately 128 Filipinos reside in Nepal, with the Filipino community in the country largely composed of women married to Nepali nationals, according to the DFA.
The DFA said Philippine authorities will continue to closely monitor developments and coordinate with Nepali officials as rescue and assessment efforts continue.
