PNP pushes wider use of forensic science in criminal probes

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is pushing for the wider use of forensic science in criminal investigations to help establish facts more accurately and strengthen the reliability of police findings.
In a statement, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. underscored the importance of modern forensic science in professional police work.
“It allows us to go beyond statements and circumstantial evidence by using scientific findings to establish the truth,” he said.
According to the PNP, the push follows the modernization of the Forensic Group’s morgue and the expansion of its sewage treatment facility.
The upgraded morgue now has a negative-pressure system to control airborne contaminants, as well as improved freezers, X-ray equipment, and high-resolution closed-circuit television cameras, the PNP added.
Nartatez said the modernization strengthens the police force’s ability to solve crimes using science, technology, and reliable forensic evidence.
“It will help our investigators establish facts more accurately and build stronger cases,” he added.
As such, Nartatez ordered the Forensic Group to evaluate its regional facilities and identify those requiring immediate modernization as the PNP considers rolling out similar upgrades in Cebu and Mindanao.
“Our objective is to make forensic examinations faster, more accurate, and more reliable. We will ensure that these investments directly improve the quality of investigations and the delivery of justice,” he said.
