Around P12.34.34 billion worth of seized illegal drugs and expired medicines were destroyed on Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Integrated Waste Management Inc. in Trece Martirez, Cavite, the  Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said.
PDEA said the destroyed items marked its  largest volume of destruction this year.
Through thermal decomposition or thermolysis the destroyed dangerous drugs a total of 2,224,679.9705 grams of solid substances, together with 106,386.0500 milliliters of liquid dangerous drugs, were incinerated during the activity.
PDEA Director General Isagani Nerez  said the bulk of the substances consisted of 1,774,023.9425 grams of shabu approximately valued at P12.06 billion.
He said a significant portion of this volume came from major anti-illegal drug operations, including the interception of 876,000 grams of shabu in MIMAROPA, one of the largest drug interdictions in the region.
In addition, Nerez said that 906,406.40 grams of shabu were also seized in Valenzuela City during a major operation involving law enforcement partners from Calabarznon.
“The destruction likewise covered 433,336.9546 grams of marijuana; 2,208.7373 grams of cocaine; 21.2214 grams of MDMA; 9.0571 grams of MDMA+Meth; 51 grams of diazepam; 2.7076 grams of Ketamine; 22.1000 grams of nitrazepam; 4.2500 grams of psilocybin; 1,797 milliliters of liquid marijuana; 104,589.0500 milliliters of liquid methamphetamine hydrochloride; and 15,000 grams of assorted expired medicines,’’ the PDEA said.
Nerez said this represents the culmination of law enforcement efforts that led to the confiscation and eventual permanent disposal of these dangerous drugs.
“These drugs were taken off the streets through the hard work of our law enforcement personnel and other law enforcement agencies.Their incineration ensures that these substances can no longer return to the illegal drug market or pose a threat to our communities,” Nerez pinted out.
With the destruction process, Nerez emphasized that more than two tons of dangerous drugs have now been permanently removed from the illegal drug trade.
“Behind this figure are continuous efforts by our personnel and partners to intercept illegal drugs before they reach our communities. We remain committed to sustaining these efforts and disrupting the illegal drug trade at every point in the supply chain,” Nerez assured.
The event was witnessed by Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) chairperson Oscar F Valenzuela, who served as Guest of Honor and Speaker, together with representatives from government and law enforcement agencies, partner organizations, and the media.
“This activity forms part of PDEA’s continuing efforts to ensure the proper and permanent disposition of confiscated dangerous drugs in accordance with established procedures,’’ Nerez said.
The PDEA chief said that the activity marks the final stage in the handling of seized substances that have completed the necessary legal processes for disposal.
“This also underscores PDEA’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the handling and disposition of dangerous drugs, consistent with its mandate to ensure that confiscated substances are properly accounted for and permanently disposed of after completion of the required legal processes,’’ Nerez emphasized.
