The Office of the Vice President (OVP) honored 40 war veterans from Davao City on Wednesday, August 27, in a pre-National Heroes Day celebration recognizing their courage, sacrifice, and service to the country.
In a statement, the OVP said Vice President Sara Duterte led the gathering, titled “Saludo: Mga Kuwentong Tapang at Paglilingkod,” which paid tribute to Filipino veterans whose wartime experiences form part of the nation's history.
The thanksgiving event brought together veterans who were recognized for their years of service and sacrifices in defending the country and protecting the Filipino people during periods of conflict.
“The celebration brought together 40 war veterans who were recognized for their years of service and sacrifices for the country,” the OVP said.
“Through the gathering, the OVP expressed its appreciation for their role in defending the nation and protecting the Filipino people during periods of conflict,” it added.
Recognizing courage and sacrifice
Through the “Saludo” initiative, the OVP expressed appreciation for the contributions of war veterans and highlighted the importance of preserving and remembering their stories.
The event comes as the country prepares to commemorate National Heroes Day, which honors Filipinos whose courage, patriotism, and sacrifices have helped shape the nation's history.
Also present at the gathering were OVP Chief of Staff Atty. Zuleika Lopez, Director for Operations Norman Baloro, and Southern Mindanao Satellite Office Lead Generose Tecson.
Preserving veterans' stories
The OVP said the “Saludo” initiative is part of its broader efforts to recognize Filipino veterans and other individuals whose service and sacrifices have contributed to the country.
By honoring veterans and sharing their experiences, the initiative also seeks to ensure that their contributions are remembered by future generations.
The recognition of the 40 Davao City war veterans underscores the enduring importance of honoring those who served the country, particularly as Filipinos commemorate this year's National Heroes Day on August 31 and reflect on the sacrifices that underpin the nation's freedoms.
