Over 28,000 still displaced following severe weather disturbances

104 LGUs declare state of calamity

The weather condition has been improving in the past days, yet, more than 28,000 people are still staying in various evacuation centers in some parts of the country after losing their homes to the widespread flooding and other adverse effects of typhoons and heavy rains.
The more than 28,000 evacuees are from 2,800 families in 10 regions from Luzon to Mindanao as the national government continues to infuse funds for assistance and rehabilitation of damaged homes and infrastructure
More than 2,800 homes were damaged as a result of the onslaught of tropical cyclones “Luis, Maymay and Neneng, as well as the heavy rains unleashed due to the southwest monsoon, or habagat in the past weeks.
The four weather disturbances contributed to almost P6 billion damage in infrastructure and almost ;2 billion in agriculture.
More than 2.2 million families composed of 7.7 million individuals were affected.
The Office of Civil Defense said a total of 31 people were in the fatality list while three others are still missing. Most of the fatalities are due to landslides and drowning.
The national government has so far released around P15 billion for food and other forms of assistance to the affected population.
A total of 104 local government units, on the other hand, declared a state of calamity to expedite the disaster response and rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the OCD convened representatives from various sectors to strengthen earthquake response following the tremors that hit Mindanao that left a trail of destruction in some provinces.
The summit, “Engineering Resilience: Building to Last Towards a National Public-Private Partnership for Earthquake Resilience”, brought together representatives from the national and local governments, academic and scientific institutions, the private sector, civil society, and international partners to promote risk-informed investments, public-private partnerships, innovative financing, evidence-based decision-making, and coordinated action for earthquake resilience.
The activity featured a forum with breakout sessions, followed by a high-level dialogue with senior government officials.
The forum focused on topics related to national risk reduction strategies and multi-stakeholder disaster preparedness, such as the use of risk information and science-informed approaches in national and local development planning, and measures to strengthen the resilience of critical sectors and lifelines, including utilities, telecommunications, transportation, healthcare, logistics, finance, and supply chains, among others.
