Hyundai Motor Company and Shell Lubricants have renewed their Global Business Cooperation Agreement for another five years, extending a partnership that began in 2005.
The new agreement will keep the two companies working together through 2031. Their expanded cooperation will cover future mobility research and development, aftersales service marketing, motorsports, and lubricants for high-performance and electric vehicles.
Hyundai Motor and Shell plan to continue their joint service marketing activities in global markets. The companies will also expand their technical work on engine oils and fluids developed for next-generation vehicles.
Research and development under the renewed agreement will include efforts to improve engine oil quality and develop specialized fluids and coolants for electric vehicles. Other areas identified by Shell include next-generation e-fluids, thermal management, digital technology, and high-performance mobility.
“We are pleased to extend Hyundai Motor’s long-standing partnership with Shell. Through our collaborative aftersales service marketing initiatives over the past years, we have successfully enhanced our global aftersales service competitiveness and improved customer satisfaction by delivering Shell's premium quality engine oils to Hyundai customers worldwide. Together, we will be better positioned to respond proactively to changes in the future mobility market while continuing to create greater value for our customers and strengthen our long-term global competitiveness,” said Beom Seok Kang, senior vice president and head of the Global Service Sub-Division at Hyundai Motor Company.
The renewed partnership also expands the companies’ work in motorsports. Shell is serving as a performance and innovation partner of Genesis Magma Racing during the team’s debut season in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2026.
Shell is supplying specialized lubricants and coolants for the Genesis Magma Racing GMR-001 Hypercar. The competition program will provide operating data and development experience that can be applied to lubricant and cooling products intended for road vehicles.
The companies will also work through Hyundai N to co-engineer lubricants for high-performance combustion engines and electric vehicles. Hyundai’s performance division will serve as a development environment for testing new lubricant technologies under demanding operating conditions.
“For more than two decades, Shell and Hyundai Motor have partnered to deliver innovation, performance, and customer value globally. Together, we have advanced lubricant technology, supported Hyundai Motor's mobility ambitions, and translated learnings from motorsport into real-world benefits. As we look ahead, we are expanding our collaboration in next-generation e-fluids, thermal management, digital innovation, and high-performance mobility. By combining our expertise we will continue to develop solutions that enhance performance, efficiency, and sustainability for Hyundai Motor and our customers worldwide,” said Lee Ming Seow, vice president for Global Key Accounts and New Business Development at Shell Lubricants.
Hyundai Motor and Shell have worked together for more than 20 years. The latest agreement shifts part of their joint development work toward the fluid, cooling, and thermal-management requirements of electric vehicles while retaining their existing cooperation in engine oils, aftersales services, and motorsports.
