Veteran coach Benson Bocboc makes his Diliman comeback as he guides the University of the Philippines women’s volleyball program in the coming UAAP Season 89.
Bocboc, who spearheaded the squad in a promising Season 87 campaign, was reappointed as the Fighting Maroons mentor, succeeding the position that was previously held by Italian mentor Fabio Menta in Season 88.
Menta anchored the Fighting Maroons to a 5-9 win-loss record, while Bocboc led the school to a 6-8 slate. Both seasons saw them fall short for a Final Four shot at No. 6
"Coach Boc proved himself to be a capable coach when he set us up for success in Season 87," said UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development Director Bo Perasol. “Tiwala tayong magagawa niya ulit ang ganun now we're entering a new era.”
"No expectations, no pressure muna ulit tayo. Basta rito naman sa UP, ang panigurado, lalaban," Bocboc added.
A member of the coaching staff of Premier Volleyball League’s Farm Fresh and Alas Pilipinas Women, Bocboc will try to steer UP to a magical run despite the challenge of not having their previous talents in Nina Ytang, Joan Monares and Irah Jaboneta.
The troika jumped into the professional ranks after inserting their names in this year’s PVL Draft last June.
With that being said, Bocboc, also a former member of De La Salle’s coaching staff, will lean on Casiey Dongallo who is on track of recovering from her ACL injury.
Dongallo is expected to headline the pack alongside Kianne Olango, Jelai Gajero, Bienne Bansil, Jaz Manguilomotan, and Julia De Leon.
