TIEZA Chief to grace Baguio Day celebration on Sept 1

BAGUIO CITY -- Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) Operating Officer Mark Lapid will be the guest of honor and speaker in the 117th celebration of Baguio Day to be held at the Baguio Convention and Cultural Center on September 1.
According to Mayor Benjamin Magalong, the invitation to Lapid was in recognition of his contributions to Baguio City in the field of tourism, especially his concern for the development and beautification of Burnham Park, which will lead the ribbon cutting for the opening of the lake after the program.
Under the theme "Cultivating Circularity: Building a Sustainable Baguio," under Executive Order 97, series of 2026, issued by Magalong, this year's theme "reflects the city's commitment to circular activities by promoting responsible resource use, innovation, cultural preservation and community collaboration towards a resilient, sustainable, and sustainable Baguio." According to Magalong, the commemoration "pays tribute to Baguio's heritage and achievements," reaffirms "the community's shared commitments to a progressive, inclusive, and sustainable future," and highlights the unity of the people of Baguio, anchored in its indigenous heritage and enriched by the diverse cultures of its inhabitants. One of the highlights of the occasion was the selection and awarding of five prominent residents as Outstanding Citizens, for their contributions to the city of Baguio.
According to Acting City Tourism Officer Engr. Alec Mapalo, other notable events are the 63rd Baguio Center Mall Non-Master Chess Tournament (Baguio Day Cup) to be held at the Baguio Center Mall 5th floor activity area on August 29; and on August 30, the 3rd Baguio Half-Marathon will take place at Burnham Lake Drive.
Other preparatory activities on August 30 (Sunday) are the Sunday Pedestrianization of the Baguio Country Fair starting at Session Road, with a ribbon cutting at 8:00 AM; the chalk art competition on lower Session Road, where each group will design a panel related to the theme of the 117th Charter Day; a pet (country-themed) fashion show on upper Session Road starting at 9 AM; and Country Jam, open to all country band groups, starting at 3 PM on Calderon Street.
On August 31, line dance competitions will take place on Upper Session Road, followed by a Country Fashion Show on Calderon Street, cultural performances, country fair games, a battle of the bands, a cultural melting pot showcase, a most creative photo contest, a children's cowboy costume competition, and a best Cowboy Town booth contest.
On September 1, a fireworks display will take place after the celebration at 7 p.m.
According to Mapalo, more activities will take place until the end of September, including the Ms. Baguio 2026 event from August 30 to September 1, with the coronation on September 5.
Baguio Victory Day is on September 3, a working holiday marking the formal surrender of Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita at Camp John Hay in 1945, which ended World War II in the Pacific.
Upcoming activities include the 3rd BCTBA National Open Championships on September 1-5 at the Puyat Sports Bowling Center; the Online Trivia Challenge on September 2-5 at the Baguio City Public Library; the Civil Service Commission CAR PCSA Fun Run and the Baguio Students Day 2026 on September 13; the Baguio City Hall Fun Run on September 16; City Hall Family Day and Mini-Olympics on September 16-17; the Country Club Fun Run on September 20; a Job Fair on September 26 (venue to be arranged); the National Invitational Arnis Tournament on September 26-27; and the Foundation Day Marathon on September 27.
