PNP beefs up monitoring, coordination over reports of online groomers recruiting kids for violent acts

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified the monitoring and coordination with foreign counterparts in relation to the reports of a group of online groomers allegedly recruiting children to engage in violent acts.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said other local agencies are also being consulted concerned in connection with the online threats pertaining to safety and wellbeing of minors, particularly those engaging in online games.
“Police presence is not only active and visible on the streets and in the community. We are making sure that the PNP’s presence is also felt in cyber space to protect the netizens, especially the children,” said Nartatez.
Authorities earlier reported that the groomers profile minors and teach them violent behavior. The group reportedly includes members from other countries, although most are said to be Filipinos.
Nartatez said the PNP has conducted an investigation to determine the extent of the operations and influence of those allegedly involved in targeting children. Part of the probe, he said, is the coordination with their foreign counterparts.
“There is no boundary in cyberspace and as such, we need to coordinate and work with as many of our foreign counterparts to achieve the desired goal,” said Nartatez.
He also appealed to parents to take an active role in protecting their children from individuals who may seek to exploit them through social media and other online platforms.
He urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities, especially online. He also called on them to report suspicious activities or individuals their children may encounter on social media.
