PAGASA monitoring cloud clusters for possible LPA development

Cloud clusters east of the country are being monitored for possible low-pressure area (LPA) development that could further enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
PAGASA senior weather specialist Glaiza Escullar said the habagat remains the dominant weather system as of Wednesday.
“We are also closely monitoring cloud clusters east of Northern Luzon, as well as far east of Visayas. So minomonitor po natin yan for the possible formation of LPAs within these cloud clusters dahil may effect din po yan sa enhancement ng habagat (We are also closely monitoring cloud clusters east of Northern Luzon, as well as far east of the Visayas. We are monitoring them for the possible formation of LPAs within these cloud clusters because they could also affect the enhancement of the southwest monsoon),” Escullar said during PAGASA’s climate forum.
Escullar said Typhoon Saudel, formerly locally named “Obet,” which is currently crossing Japan, continues to stir the southwest monsoon.
“Ito pa rin ang nagpapairal sa southwest monsoon dahilan para meron pa ring expected na habagat in the coming days (It is still driving the southwest monsoon, which is why the southwest monsoon is expected to continue in the coming days),” she said.
Due to anticipated significant rainfall over parts of Luzon, PAGASA’s Weather Division has issued a heavy rainfall advisory for the next three days.
On Wednesday, occasional rains of 50 to 100 millimeters, categorized as moderate to heavy, are expected to continue over Zambales.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, occasional moderate to heavy rains are expected over La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
By Friday, Escullar said the effects of the enhanced habagat are expected to spread further, with occasional rains of 100 to 200 millimeters, classified as heavy to intense, forecast over Zambales and Occidental Mindoro.
Occasional moderate to heavy rainfall are also expected over Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, and Batangas.
