Police arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the death of a 49-year-old barangay sweeper following a confrontation in Pasay City on Monday, Aug. 24.
Pasay City Police chief Col. Joselito De Sesto identified the suspect as Karl, 26, who is now under police custody while investigators determine his possible involvement in the incident.
The victim, Red, 49, also a resident of the barangay, was found unconscious on the pavement in front of Alpha Mart convenience store around 11:30 p.m., shortly after the two engaged in an altercation.
Initial investigation showed the incident stemmed from the victim’s accusation that the suspect had stolen his money.
Police said the victim shouted at Karl before going downstairs from his residence to confront him. The suspect was reportedly staying on the ground floor of the same house.
The two later went outside, and moments later the victim was found lying unconscious. A witness saw him gasping for breath and tried to help.
He was rushed by a barangay ambulance to the Philippine General Air Force Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival due to a heart attack.
Barangay tanods arrested the suspect at his residence and brought him to Police Sub Station 9 for documentation.
He was turned over to the Investigation Section and charged with homicide.
Police are continuing to establish the circumstances of the victim’s death and the extent of the suspect’s involvement.
