'Ang Pinakamasarap Na Pares Sa Balat Ng Lupa': Silly, crass and a lot of fun

“Ang Pinakamasarap Na Pares Sa Balat Ng Lupa” is not for everybody.

Some might find it too stupid for its own good.

That said, if you surrender to its brand of comedy, there are enough laugh-out-loud moments to make it work.

It belongs to the tradition of weed-induced adventures like “Up in Smoke,” “Pineapple Express,” “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” and “Half Baked,” movies where logic takes a back seat and the characters simply go with the flow.

And that is exactly what you have to do here.

Just go with it.

The comedy can be crass and, at times, downright inane. But the timing and chemistry of Jerald Napoles and Pepe Herrera carry much of it. The supporting cast is equally game.

Despite the title, the movie isn't really about pares. Yes, the brothers are looking for the best one because one of them wants a delicious serving before his supposed 24 hours on Earth are up.

But beneath the silliness is a story about two estranged brothers.

One wants to cook but can't, so he becomes a food critic vlogger. The other can cook but knows his pares isn't as good as the one made by their grandmother. Both are jealous of each other, and that jealousy has driven them apart.

So, underneath all the stupid jokes and pares-hunting, it is a story about love and understanding.

Those who enjoy the old-school comedy of Rene Requiestas, Redford White and Babalu will likely find something familiar here.

Just don't overthink it.
