Marcos made the statement during an inspection at the MD Juan Enterprises' factory in Caloocan City on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
To achieve this, the President said the government will support the local manufacturing industry and isteps that companies can take to further strengthen their production, such as MD Juan's.
"So, the next step is to put in some of the new equipment na that is still necessary for the production of the electric vehicle. At alam na namin yung gagawin (And we know what to do)," Marcos said.
"And together with our technical consultants, I believe that we will soon be seeing a Filipino electric vehicle, tricycle, at maybe down the road makagawa na tayo ng jeepney," Marcos added.
MD Juan manufactures automotive parts and components for civilian and military jeeps.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) pledged to provide technology to further improve the quality of the company’s products and speed up its production.
According to the President, supporting the production of electric vehicles advances his administration's goal of reducing the country's dependence on petroleum products imported from other countries.
"In this way, our economy will become more stable, as well as the livelihood of those, especially our fellow Filipinos, who operate public transport vehicles," Marcos said.
Marcos said his visit to the factory would help them identify what needs to be done and what help must be provided
"Ngayon kaya tayo nandito tinitignan natin kung ano yung mga kailangan gawin para kaya na nila na makapag-fabricate ng all-Filipino na electric na tricycle at electric na jeepney kung sakali dumating sa ganun (But the reason we are here today is to look at what needs to be done so that they will be capable of fabricating all-Filipino electric tricycles and electric jeepneys, should we reach that stage)," the President said.
"Kaya tinitignan namin ang mga facilities, ano yung nandito na, ano na yung mga kulang, ano pa yung mga kulang na susuportahan ng ating DOST, ng national government para makapagawa na tayo ng electric vehicle dito sa Pilipinas (We are examining the facilities—what is already available, what is still lacking, and what additional support is needed from the DOST and the national government so that we can begin producing electric vehicles here in the Philippines)," Marcos added.
Marcos emphasized that MD Juan is recognized as an organization with a long history in the field.
He added that the company is "leading in the development of the technologies we need so that we can assemble, fabricate, and manufacture electric vehicles entirely sourced from the Philippines."
