Typhoon Obet enters Philippine area of responsibility — PAGASA

Typhoon Saudel entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) at 1:20 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and was assigned the local name “Obet,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
Before entering PAR, Saudel was located 1,480 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon at 10 a.m.
It had maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 215 kph while moving west-northwestward at 30 kph.
PAGASA earlier said Saudel is near super typhoon strength and may intensify into a super typhoon, with maximum sustained winds of at least 180 kph, before or while inside PAR.
However, the typhoon is expected to remain over the Philippine Sea and is less likely to directly affect the country’s weather and sea conditions over the next three days.
PAGASA said Saudel is expected to exit PAR Monday evening or early Tuesday, Aug. 25, although a more westward track could result in it remaining within PAR beyond Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Saudel is enhancing the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” which is affecting Northern and Central Luzon.
The effects of the habagat over Luzon are expected to continue for the next four days.
