Scissors, lightes, shavers confiscated as Zamboanga City schools intensify security

ZAMBOANGA CITY- Security measures were intensified on Monday, August 14, in all school campuses here following a school shooting at a private university last week.

Students, teaching staff and non-teaching personnel underwent stringent security measures before being allowed to pass through the school gates.

At the Zamboanga City High School Main, one of the most populated schools here, barangay tanods joined school guards in conducting manual inspection, resulting in long queues outside the gate.

In another school on the east coast, security guards and barangay tanods confiscated scissors, lighters and other sharp objects found inside bags during inspection.

In another private university, Universidad de Zamboanga, students had to pass a walk through scanner while school bags were placed on a conveyor for inspection.

A long implemented system for dropping off students was changed at the Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School where cars were no longer allowed to enter the school gates. Children were instead instructed to be dropped off outside.

The heightened security measures were among those agreed upon during a meeting of school heads, police officials and local government officials at City Hall on Friday, August 20.
