PNP vows all-out support after surgeons reattach Bicol hero cop's severed left hand

He could have just shot a jungle bolo-armed amok to finish the public safety crisis right there and then but Police Staff Sergeant Nilo M. Miraña chose to honor and preserve life—especially that he was dealing with a man believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis in San Jose, Camarines Sur on Aug. 22.
Miraña nearly lost his life and his arm after he was attacked and the Philippine National Police (PNP) has committed all-out medical support and other assistance after all the necessary medical intervention that include a complicated surgery to reattach his severed left hand.
All the assistance that the PNP could provide, according to PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. will never be enough to repay the courage, restraint and professionalism he showed when he tried to calm down a bolo-armed amok in San Jose, Camarines Sur on Aug. 22.
“This incident underscores the risks faced by our personnel who respond to calls for assistance, often without knowing what they will encounter. I commend Police Staff Sergeant Noli M. Miraña and his fellow officers for their courage, restraint, and professionalism in responding to this dangerous situation,” said Nartatez.
Miraña was among the personnel of the San Jose Municipal Police Station who responded to a report of an armed individual in Barangay Calalahan.
The responding team, led by Miraña, initially tried to communicate with the man and peacefully de-escalate the situation. The suspect was believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
The situation turned violent when the suspect suddenly charged at the officers, causing Miraña to fall. The man then attacked him with a bolo, inflicting severe injuries to his left hand and face.
Miraña’s fellow officers immediately intervened after the attack, firing their service firearms and hitting the suspect in both thighs, stopping the threat and preventing further harm.
Miraña and the suspect were brought to Partido District Hospital and were later transferred to the Bicol Medical Center for further treatment.
On Monday, Miraña was conferred the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting in recognition for his courage, gallantry, and selfless dedication to duty.
“Despite the sudden and life-threatening assault, PSSg Miraña displayed exceptional courage, presence of mind, and unwavering commitment to his sworn duty,” the statement from the Police Regional Office 5 read.
“His courageous actions allowed his fellow police officers to immediately intervene and prevent the suspect from inflicting further harm on other members of the community,” it added.
MIraña was commended for his actions that now serves as an inspiration to his fellow police officers and a testament to the courage expected of those who have sworn to protect and serve the people.
“His sacrifice stands as a powerful reminder that behind every police uniform is a public servant willing to face danger and hardship in the pursuit of peace, order, and public safety. His bravery and devotion to duty embody the enduring spirit of the PNP—to serve and protect, whatever the cost,” the statement read.
Miraña is currently under observation after the surgery.
