- Sotto's return couldn't be even more timely as Gilas is facing possible elimination from the race for a World Cup ticket if it loses its two crucial games against Jordan and Iran in the August window.
Gilas Pilipinas may have lost one of its potent weapons in Justin Brownlee but it is welcoming back one that is capable of turning things around for the Nationals.
National team head coach Tim Cone is glad to finally have Kai Sotto back in the fold after missing significant time after suffering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January last year.
Sotto’s return couldn’t be even more timely as Gilas is facing possible elimination from the race for a World Cup ticket if it loses its two crucial games against Jordan and Iran in the August window.
For Cone, having the 7-foot-3 center, undoubtedly, raised the team’s chances of winning.
“We think he’s going to cause problems for both teams and he’s going to make the team around him better. He’s just a great addition and we’re just really happy to have him,” Cone said of Sotto.
And the records have proved Sotto’s value for the Nationals. In Gilas’ past tournaments, the Filipinos were beating teams above them in the world rankings in the likes of Latvia and New Zealand.
Without the prized center, Gilas is only 4-9 through the Asia Cup, Asia Cup qualifiers and World Cup qualifiers, only beating teams below the top 60 in the world.
And that’s exactly why Cone is just elated to have Sotto back in the team.
“He’s really been impactful. We’re kind of building around him,” said Cone.
Cone admitted that the other players are still getting used to having Sotto in the middle but he hopes that the team would regain their chemistry in time for the game against Jordan on Friday, Aug. 28.
“He’s relatively, I don’t want to say new to the team, (but)he hasn’t been with us for a couple of years so guys are still adjusting to his level of play. And we hope that that just continues over the next few days,” said Cone.
