Gilas Women clinch FIBA U23 3x3 World Cup spot

The Gilas Pilipinas women’s team booked a spot to the FIBA U23 3x3 World Cup after topping the sixth and final leg of Nations League Asia SEA Conference with a pulsating 17-15 win over Chinese Taipei in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia on Sunday, Aug. 23.

In dire need of valuable points to qualify to the global showpiece in Wuhan, China next month, the Nationals leaned on the end game heroics of Amyah Espanol to turn back the Taiwanese.

Gilas trailed 11-15 in the last 50 seconds before Espanol unloaded a personal 6-0 outburst, draining a deuce, then scoring on an and-1 play before coolly sinking two free throws to put the Nationals on the lead.

Espanol finished with 12 points while Victoria Pasilang and Kennan Ka, had four and one point, respectively. Also part of the quartet is Jam Meniano.

With the win, the women’s team amassed a total of 510 points, enough to qualify and join the Gilas Boys team in the global showpiece.
