A 26-year-old Marikina police officer sustained injuries after being hit by a motorcycle rider who attempted to escape during a checkpoint in Barangay Fortune, police said Saturday, Aug. 22.
The Marikina City Police Station said the incident occurred around 2:35 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, after personnel from Police Sub-Station 7 flagged down the rider along Fortune Avenue in front of a gasoline station.
Authorities stopped the rider, identified as “Michael,” for inspection after noticing that his back rider was not wearing a helmet.
During the inspection, the rider allegedly drove off suddenly and hit the police officer, who fell to the ground and sustained injuries to various parts of his body.
Police immediately pursued and arrested the rider.
The injured officer, Pat. Christian John Rodriguez, was given first aid before being taken to the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (ARMMC) for treatment.
The suspect is currently under custody at the Marikina CPS Custodial Facility and is facing charges of Direct Assault and Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority.
Eastern Police District chief Brig. Gen. Melecio M. Buslig Jr. commended the police officers for their alertness and professionalism following the incident.
"Our police officers risk their lives every day in the performance of their duties. Acts of violence against law enforcement personnel will never be tolerated. We commend our officers for their swift response and unwavering commitment to public safety," Buslig stated.
