Undefeated Filipino middleweight contender Weljon Mindoro is set for his toughest test yet when he takes on veteran Carlos Ocampo in a bout that is seen as crucial to his hopes of earning a world title shot.
Mindoro is not only aiming for the vacant World Boxing Council Federación Centroamericana de Boxeo middleweight crown but also to position himself in the rankings on Saturday, Aug. 29, at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.
The 26-year-old pride of Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur is coming off his very first unanimous victory after winning his previous 16 bouts via stoppage.
He defeated Mexico’s Elias Espada, 98-91, 97-92, and 96-93 just last June.
But Ocampo is on an entirely different level as compared to Mindoro’s previous foes.
He already has a total of 42 fights, 38 of which he won against only four losses. Two of those losses were world title fights against boxing stars Sebastian Fundora and Tim Tszyu.
The Mexican, however, is coming off a defeat to Callum Walsh via unanimous decision last January.
