ICC Head Akane stresses importance of support from Japan

BRUSSELS, Aug. 22 (Jiji Press) -- International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane from Japan has said that support from her country will be crucial following a U.S. decision to impose sanctions on her.
"I am not surprised (at the decision) as I had anticipated it to some extent," she said in a comment included in a social media post on Friday by Japanese publisher Bungeishunju Ltd., which had published her book.
"The important thing is not to let this become the beginning of the end of the rule of law."
"The support from Japan and the Japanese people will be a crucial key," she stressed.
The U.S. government Tuesday designated Akane and a Senegalese senior trial lawyer at The Hague-based court as targets of sanctions.
As a result, nine of the court's 18 judges are subject to U.S. sanctions, as are some prosecutors and staff members.
