Abra routs Valenzuela, tightens grip on top spot

  • Defending champion Abra Solid North started hot and never cooled to rout Valenzuela City, 106-70, on Saturday, Aug. 22, and tighten its grip on the North division lead in the SportsPlus MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) 2026 Season at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna.

Defending champion Abra Solid North started hot and never cooled to rout Valenzuela City, 106-70, on Saturday, Aug. 22, and tighten its grip on the North division lead in the SportsPlus MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) 2026 Season at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna.

The Abra Weavers scored the game's first 12 points and led as far as 105-64 en route to their 18th straight win and a 20-1 record in the round-robin elimination round of the two-division, 26-team tournament.

Abra is assured of a top four finish and the homecourt edge in the quarterfinal playoffs.

Encho Serrano paced Abra with 22 points and 2 assists, followed by Mike Ayonayon with 15 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds, Tucker Molina with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, and John Uduba with 12 points and 3 rebounds.

Molina, who delighted the crowd with a follow-up dunk in the fourth quarter, was chosen the SportsPlus best player over Serrano and Ayonayon.

A 14-point bundle shoved Abra ahead, 70-39, with 1 minute and 55 seconds to go in the third quarter.

The outcome settled, 93-56, both sides fielded their second stringers, with the Weavers proving better than their Darkhorse counterparts.

With Gonzales, Jake Figueroa and Drex Delos Reyes asserting their power, the Weavers ruled the boards, 61-39, and converted this to  ore points in the paint, 52-28.

Back-to-back triples by Molina and AyonAyon gave Abra a 46-21 spread, but Valenzuela bundled 13 points to reduce the gap at halftime, 46-34.

Abra hardly missed top gunner Dave Ildefonso, who played for Strong Group Athletics in the ongoing Jones Cup in Taiwan. 

The tournament returns to the Orion Sports Complex on Monday, featuring games between Imus and Quezon City at 3 p.m., Mindoro and Negros at 5 p.m., and Zamboanga and host Bataan at 7 p.m.
