PH Coast Guard warns of possible rocket debris from China launch
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District North Eastern Luzon DNELZN) has advised mariners, fishermen, and the public to exercise caution during the scheduled launch of China’s Long March-5 rocket scheduled on Monday, August 24, 2026.
The launch is set to take place between 8:00 a.m. and 9:11 a.m. Philippine Standard Time (PhST) from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Wenchang, Hainan, China.
According to the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), portions of the rocket may fall within two designated drop zones located inside the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Drop Zone 1 is approximately 67 nautical miles from Burgos, Ilocos Norte; 89 nautical miles from Vigan, Ilocos Sur; and 97 nautical miles from Dalupiri Island, Cagayan.
Drop Zone 2 is approximately 148 nautical miles from Santa Ana, Cagayan, and 169 nautical miles from Babuyan Island.
While the risk of untoward incidents and damage from falling rocket debris within Philippine territory is considered relatively low, the Coast Guard urged all vessels to avoid the identified drop zones during the launch window and observe appropriate maritime safety measures.
The Philippine Coast Guard through PCG DNELZN said it will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with concerned government agencies to ensure maritime safety and security.
