Floodwaters at least a foot deep remained in at least 574 areas across the country on Saturday, Aug. 22, due to the combined effects of the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and Tropical Cyclones Luis, Maymay, and Neneng, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
The OCD said a total of 7.4 million individuals or about 2.1 million families were affected by the weather disturbances across 10 regions. These were in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos (Region 1), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), National Capital Region (NCR), Calabarzon (Region 4A), Mimaropa (Region 4B), Bicol (Region 5), Western Visayas (Region 6), Eastern Visayas (Region 8), and Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9).
The weather disturbances have caused prolonged rains and flooding in the affected regions. Some communities have also been dealing with swollen waterways and saturated ground after successive weather systems affected the country.
In Central Luzon, there were 446 flooded areas, the most among those hit by continuous rains during the previous weeks. It was followed by Mimaropa with 42 flooded areas, Ilocos Region with 35, Western Visayas with 26, and Calabarzon with 25.
The OCD said the government has provided P1.1 billion worth of assistance to the affected communities.
OCD information officer Diego Mariano said the assistance came from local government units, the OCD, and other government agencies.
“For the assistance distributed to the affected communities, we have already reached more than P1 billion worth of assistance distributed by the government,” Mariano said.
Mariano said authorities were still coordinating measures to address persistent flooding, particularly in Pampanga.
“Various agencies continue to coordinate to determine what solutions can be undertaken for the flooding that continues. This is being led by their local government units and the Department of Public Works and Highways to identify other solutions to the flooding,” he said.
Meanwhile, the OCD said 549 evacuation centers remained operational, sheltering 11,900 families or 40,600 persons.
“The delivery of assistance or aid to our affected countrymen continues,” Mariano assured the public.
The latest assessment also showed that the death toll remained at 29, with 19 injured and three missing persons.
The combined infrastructure and agricultural losses also stood at P6.6 billion.
The OCD also reported 89 cities and municipalities under a state of calamity. These included Dagupan City; Santa Barbara, Mangaldan, Bugallon and Mangatarem in Pangasinan; La Trinidad in Benguet; the entire provinces of Bataan (12 areas), Bulacan (24 areas), Pampanga (21 areas), and Cavite (23 areas); Masinloc in Zambales; Rodriguez in Rizal; and Nasugbu in Batangas.
