ILOILO CITY—Senator Risa Hontiveros has expressed her willingness to be the opposition’s sole presidential candidate for the May 2028 elections.
“I am preparing very hard, working very hard … I’m strengthening myself as the strongest possible candidate,” Hontiveros responded to a question by Manila Bulletin during a press conference in Iloilo City.
The lady senator said that she would talk to other allies once there are indicators she’s the strongest possible candidate.
“Importante isa lang (It’s important there’s only one). Let’s unite around the strongest one so we have a fighting chance,” Hontiveros emphasized.
It was last June 13 when a movement calling for Hontiveros to run as president was launched in Iloilo City with more than 1,500 people from across Western Visayas region, where she has roots. Her grandfather Jose Miraflores Hontiveros was once governor of the Province of Capiz.
Hontiveros thanked Ilonggos and other Western Visayas for their early support.
Hontiveros is among the names being floated in surveys for presidential candidates, a list which Vice President Sara Duterte is currently leading.
Other names include former Vice President and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo and Senator Erwin Tulfo.
