A 911 emergency call led San Juan City police to rescue an 18-year-old woman allegedly abused by a 42-year-old American who had invited her through an online messaging app to accompany him to a bar.
The Eastern Police District (EPD) said Thursday, Aug. 20, that the suspect, identified as “Andrew,” met the victim via WhatsApp before bringing her to a house in Barangay Sta. Lucia, San Juan City.
The EPD told the Manila Bulletin that the suspect and the victim had known each other for a long time and that the suspect had invited her to accompany him to a bar.
"Nag-chat ang suspect thru WhatsApp (The suspect sent a message through WhatsApp), inviting the victim to accompany him to a nearby bar and picked her up in BGC, Taguig City," EPD said.
The victim alleged that the suspect made unwanted sexual advances and touched her inappropriately inside a vehicle and later at the residence.
Fearing for her safety, the victim managed to send her location to her boyfriend for help, prompting him to immediately call the national emergency hotline 911.
After the call, personnel from the San Juan City Police Station Sub-Station 2, along with members of the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), Barangay Security Force (BSF), and Women and Children Desk Officer (WCDO) of Barangay Sta. Lucia, immediately proceeded to the location and rescued the victim.
The suspect is now at the San Juan CPS Custodial Facility and may face charges for violation of Article 336 of the Revised Penal Code or Acts of Lasciviousness.
EPD chief Brig. Gen. Melecio M. Buslig Jr. commended the responding personnel for their quick response and stressed the importance of the 911 Emergency Hotline in providing immediate police assistance during emergencies.
"This incident demonstrates the vital role of the 911 Emergency Hotline and the readiness of our police officers to respond to calls for help. The swift coordination between the concerned citizen, the emergency response system, and our personnel enabled the immediate rescue of the victim and the arrest of the suspect,” he said.
“We encourage the public to continue reporting emergencies through 911 so that law enforcement can act without delay,” he added.
Meanwhile, the EPD vowed to continue protecting women and children and ensuring that reports of abuse and exploitation are promptly addressed, with the safety and welfare of victims as a priority.
