Pasay City is stepping up efforts to keep its flood-control facilities operational as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inspected the Tripa de Gallina Pumping Station on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Marcos, accompanied by Pasay Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano, Congressman Tony Calixto, and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes, checked the pumping station as part of the government’s continuing assessment of flood-control infrastructure in Metro Manila.
Rubiano said the pumping station plays an important role in removing excess water and helping mitigate flooding in Pasay and surrounding areas during heavy rains.
During the inspection, Marcos noted that the facility was operating properly and at full capacity, according to Rubiano.
However, the President also raised concern over the volume of garbage entering the pumping station, which could affect the efficiency of its operations.
Rubiano said the city will continue to prioritize the maintenance and monitoring of the facility, particularly during the rainy season when heavy rainfall can quickly put pressure on drainage systems.
She also urged residents to properly dispose of their garbage, noting that waste thrown into streets, canals, and waterways can eventually reach pumping stations, clog drainage systems, and hamper flood-control operations.
The inspection came as government agencies continue to evaluate and improve flood-control measures in Metro Manila amid recurring flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
