Angono marks 88th founding anniversary with month‑long cultural festivities

From cultural shows, art exhibits, and musical performances to trade fairs, the people of Angono have a month-long celebration marking the municipality’s 88th founding anniversary of the Art Capital of the country.

On Aug. 19, Mayor Gerardo Calderon led local officials in celebrating Angono Day with a morning Holy Mass at the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Clement, followed by the offering of flowers and seedlings of fruit-bearing trees by students, barangay officials, and municipal employees at the foot of the monument of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon fronting the town hall.

Participants later joined the local officials in a morning parade along M.L. Quezon Street, which ushered in the Angono Day activities throughout the day.
Calderon said Senator Imee Marcos sent her “Nutri-Jeep” to take part in the celebration, where the so-called “nutri buns” (vitamin-fortified bread) and refreshments were distributed for free to all participants at the municipal gymnasium and outside the municipal hall.

The Angono Day festivities carry the theme: “Bayang Hitik sa Pamana, Higanteng Pag-unlad ang Kasama.”
Other events happening throughout the month include the open mic spoken poetry; the Art for Stigma Reduction seminar at Camp Nenada; theater performances at the Angono gymnasium and lakeside park; and painting and sketching workshops from August 20 to 22.
The launching and unveiling of the relief sculpture entitled “Filipino Struggles Through History” will also take place at the Angono Tourism Office on August 22.
Calderon said a cultural night and thanksgiving event, as well as a concert for a cause by the Angono Concert Band, will be held at the Angono gymnasium on August 22 and August 29, respectively.
The town will also join the observance of Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21 and National Heroes Day on August 31, both to be held at Plaza Rizal.

The municipality of Angono, Rizal, was first created as a pueblo (town) in 1766, but its establishment as an independent municipality happened on August 19, 1938, through an executive order signed by then President Manuel L. Quezon.
