The Muntinlupa City government has sought the help of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in rescuing a resident who fell victim to human trafficking in Myanmar and is appealing to return home.
Mayor Ruffy Biazon said he watched a video of the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) describing how he and other migrants were being forced to work 18 to 20 hours a day without adequate food or wages, and alleging physical and sexual abuse.
Biazon directed the city’s Public Employment Service Office to coordinate with the OFW’s family, and the case was immediately referred to the DMW.
The DMW National Capital Region has since sent a letter to Labor Attache II Don Albert Philippe Pangcog of the Migrant Workers Office in Bangkok, Thailand.
In the letter, Regional Director Falconi Millar requested immediate assistance and intervention to rescue the victim and for his repatriation to the Philippines.
“We'll continue on closely monitoring the situation,” Biazon said.
