When I studied abroad, I made a deliberate decision to return to the most fundamental questions. Before thinking about artificial intelligence, national strategy, or the technologies that promise to transform our future, I wanted to understand how things actually worked. I wanted to connect hardware to software, assemble a computer with my own hands, build an integrated system that functioned well, and learn every part of the process, from individual components to the final output on a screen.
That experience taught me that progress does not begin with grand ideas alone. It begins with patient, practical knowledge. A system works because every part has a purpose, every connection has been tested, and every failure becomes an opportunity to understand something more deeply. Learning the basics gave me respect for the physical foundations of the digital world. Behind every application, algorithm, and cloud service are machines, microchips, cables, minerals, energy, and people.
This is why, when leaders talk about microchips, critical minerals, and AI hardware, I understand how powerful these resources are and how scarce they currently are. Artificial intelligence may appear invisible or weightless, but it depends on a vast physical infrastructure. It requires semiconductors, data centers, reliable electricity, cooling systems, communication networks, and the minerals used to manufacture them. Countries that control these resources and capabilities will have greater power to shape the future. Countries that remain dependent may become consumers of technologies they do not fully understand, own, or govern.
For the Philippines, the pursuit of AI sovereignty must mean more than buying powerful machines or publishing a national policy. It must mean building the knowledge, skills, institutions, and industries that allow Filipinos to participate in every layer of technology. We need engineers who can design systems, technicians who can repair them, teachers who can explain them, entrepreneurs who can create useful applications, policymakers who can regulate them wisely, and communities that can decide how technology should serve their needs.
Most importantly, AI sovereignty must not become a project reserved for a small group of experts, corporations, or urban centers. Every Filipino should have a meaningful opportunity to participate. A student in a public school, a farmer in a distant province, a worker learning new skills, or a young inventor assembling a first computer should be able to imagine a place in this future. Sovereignty is empty when technology is national in name but unequal in practice.
At the same time, we must be careful about what we sacrifice in the race to compete. Critical minerals may be essential to modern technology, but the land that contains them is also home, heritage, livelihood, and protection. Extraction without responsibility can leave communities poorer, ecosystems damaged, and future generations burdened with the consequences. We should not build an intelligent nation by exhausting the natural wealth that sustains it. We must understand every component, respect every connection, and consider the whole system. Technology, people, minerals, energy, education, and the environment are not separate concerns. They are parts of one national future.
The next generation should not inherit a country stripped of its minerals, emptied of its treasures, and left without shelter from a changing climate. They should inherit a Philippines that is technologically capable, environmentally secure, and confident in its own knowledge. True sovereignty means having the power to build the future and the wisdom to ensure that every Filipino has a place within it. That is the kind of sovereignty worth building and protecting for every generation that follows us.
