Actor Hong Min-gi accused of dating violence by former GF
South Korean actor Hong Min-gi has been accused of dating violence by a former girlfriend, who alleged that he threatened to kill her, physically assaulted her and violated her privacy during their relationship.
The woman, described in Korean reports as a college student and influencer, made the accusations in a social media post on Aug. 19.
She alleged that the 24-year-old actor once threw a soju bottle at her on the street and became enraged when he could not reach her by phone.
According to the woman, Hong Min-gi suspected that she was seeing her former boyfriend after her phone was turned off. She said he called her more than 40 times.
When they eventually met, she alleged that he threatened both her and her former boyfriend.
“I intended to kill both of you if I found you,” she quoted him as saying. She also alleged that he told her, “I will kill that bastard,” and threatened to kill the man if he encountered him.
The woman further accused the actor of physical abuse, claiming that he hit her shoulder, pushed her and grabbed her by the neck.
She also alleged that Hong Min-gi secretly went through her KakaoTalk messages and other information on her phone while looking for evidence that she had been unfaithful.
Another allegation involved an incident in which she said Hong Min-gi drove while intoxicated, resulting in a serious injury to her.
The woman said it took her several weeks after their breakup to fully recognize what she believed she had experienced in the relationship.
“It was only three weeks after the breakup (late July) that I realized what I had gone through was not love, but clear-cut violence and exploitation,” she said.
She said fear from the experience continued to affect her daily life and sleep.
“Because of that fear, I broke out in a cold sweat and my hands and feet trembled, making it impossible to sleep peacefully for even a single day or carry on with my daily life,” she said.
She added that she eventually told her parents about what had happened and began taking legal action by sending a certified letter.
The woman said she hopes Hong Min-gi will reflect on his actions, acknowledge what he allegedly did and offer her a sincere apology.
Hong Min-gi's agency, Fable Company, has yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations.
“We are currently formulating our position. We plan to make an announcement soon,” the agency told Korean media.
Hong Min-gi is known for appearing in Korean dramas including “Doctor on the Edge,” “To My Beloved Thief,” “Trigger,” “Study Group” and “One: High School Heroes.”
