Three tropical depressions are being monitored by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday, Aug. 19, including Tropical Depression Neneng inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and two others outside the PAR.
As of 4 a.m., Neneng was located 675 kilometers east of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.
PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez said Neneng is forecast to move generally west-northwestward and may make landfall over the eastern coast of Taiwan between Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, and Friday morning, Aug. 21.
The center of Neneng will likely remain over the Philippine Sea throughout the forecast period, ruling out a landfall over the Philippines.
Neneng is expected to remain a tropical depression for the next 36 hours before weakening into a remnant low over or near Taiwan on Friday morning, although earlier weakening is not ruled out.
Despite having no direct effect on the country, Neneng will enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
PAGASA said the enhanced habagat will bring heavy to intense rains over Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro over the next 24 hours.
Occasional moderate to heavy rains may affect Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, and Oriental Mindoro.
Scattered rains may persist over the rest of Luzon, Antique, and Aklan.
Meanwhile, the tropical depression formerly designated as LPA 08g was located 670 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan.
It was moving westward at 20 kph toward mainland China and was not expected to directly affect the Philippines, Dominguez said.
The third tropical depression was located 3,090 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and was moving slowly westward.
Dominguez said there is still considerable uncertainty over the weather disturbance, but it may enhance the habagat again next week and bring rains to a large part of the country.
