More cops, PNP vehicles mobilized for assistance as heavy rains continue
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has mobilized more personnel and mobility assets to assist local residents and commuters as heavy rains continue to pound Metro Manila and nearby areas.
Thousands of commuters were stranded in Metro Manila on Monday, Aug 17, as major roads were submerged in floodwaters—and huge volume of students and government workers flocked after Malacañang declared class and work suspensions.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said policemen and police vehicles were immediately deployed for free ride while police teams were tapped for evacuation of affected residents as floodwater as deep as six feet were reported in some parts of Metro Manila.
He said police service and assistance will continue not only in Metro Manila but also in all affected areas as he ordered all police units to closely monitor the situation on the ground.
“I commend all our personnel in Metro Manila and other affected areas for immediately extending assistance particularly to the stranded commuters due to the effects of the heavy rains,” said Nartatez.
“All our units in affected areas were already directed to maximize available resources in extending assistance to all our affected kababayans while more personnel and resources will be on standby for emergency situation,” he added.
Police dispatched 123 police vehicles for the initiative and directed regional and local police units to assess transport disruptions so they could use available vehicles where the need for assistance is greatest.
The PNP vehicles are being used to ferry passengers who cannot secure regular public transportation because of difficult travel conditions, mainly due to widespread flooding.
The PNP said the assistance is focused on areas where heavy rains have affected the availability and movement of public transport.
“Our personnel are coordinating with local authorities to identify areas where assistance is most needed,” Nartatez said.
Nartatez noted that the police will sustain the transport assistance for as long as necessary, adding that the deployment will be adjusted based on actual conditions on the ground and the needs of affected commuters.
“We urge the public to prioritize safety, avoid flooded areas, and seek help from our police personnel when necessary. The PNP will continue to provide assistance as long as the situation requires it,” he said.
