The low-pressure area (LPA) being monitored east of Northern Luzon developed into a tropical depression Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 18, and was named “Neneng” by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Neneng is the third tropical cyclone to develop inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this month, following Luis and Maymay.
PAGASA said Neneng was located 1,025 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph, as of 3 p.m.
It was moving northwestward at 20 kph.
Neneng may not make landfall over the Philippines but could enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
Meanwhile, another low-pressure area, designated as LPA 08g, was located 450 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan, outside the PAR.
PAGASA earlier said LPA 08g could develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours. However, it is expected to move westward, away from the country.
PAGASA is also monitoring a tropical depression outside the PAR, located 3,160 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao.
The system was almost stationary and remained too far to directly affect the country.
Regardless of the movement of the weather systems, the habagat will continue to bring rains over parts of Luzon and Western Visayas over the next 24 hours.
PAGASA said heavy to intense rains are expected over Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro.
Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, and Antique may experience occasional moderate to heavy rains.
Scattered rains and thunderstorms may affect the Negros Island Region, the rest of Luzon, and the rest of Western Visayas.
The rest of the country will generally have fair weather, although isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may occur in the afternoon or evening.
