Government agencies rolled out free transportation and towing services Tuesday, August 18, as heavy rains and flooding disrupted travel across Metro Manila.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced free towing for vehicles that became submerged, stranded or trapped in floodwaters during the rains.
The service allows affected vehicles to be towed to the owner’s home or a repair shop, provided the destination is within Metro Manila.
Motorists needing assistance were advised to coordinate with the MMDA through its official social media accounts.
Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and other government agencies began providing free rides from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, to assist commuters affected by the bad weather.
The free-riding program may be extended if necessary, according to the government announcement.
Several public hospitals in Manila also adjusted their operations amid the weather conditions.
The Sta. Ana Hospital suspended its outpatient clinic Tuesday but kept its Emergency Room and inpatient services open 24/7.
The Ospital ng Sampaloc, meanwhile, kept its outpatient department open until noon using skeletal staff. Its emergency room and leptospirosis fast lane remained open 24 hours.
Its administrative offices also remained open until noon to process hospital discharges and PhilHealth concerns.
Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and seek medical attention through emergency facilities when needed.
