CICC asks public against spreading of graphic images and videos related to Zamboanga school shooting
In a video posted on its Facebook page, the CICC (Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center) Executive Director, USEC Aboy Paraiso, reminded the public to refrain from spreading or re-uploading unverified reports and graphic or violent images and videos related to the Ateneo de Zamboanga shooting incident.
Paraiso added that re-sharing these not only adds to the trauma of the victims and their families, but may also compromise the ongoing investigation.
The statement comes after two students were killed, one of them the gunman, last Aug. 18, 2026, in the morning. Photos and videos of the incident quickly spread online, with social media users sharing and re-uploading the content. The shooter himself went on Facebook Live and streamed the incident, providing the material itself. His Facebook account has since been deactivated.
“In response to this tragedy, the CICC is actively coordinating with relevant government agencies to investigate and monitor the digital footprint of the incident, including the proliferation of online materials or livestreams related to it,” Paraiso said.
As a reminder to the public, Paraiso said: “We urge everyone to practice responsible social media usage. Please immediately report any misinformation or suspicious online activity to our authorities or notify the CICC directly via our Hotline 1326.”
The Zamboanga shooting comes after an attack in June at a public high school in Tacloban City, where three students were killed, and about 20 others were injured after two students opened fire in the school.
