ILOILO CITY—The number of barangays (villages) in this city affected by flood from heavy rainfall enhanced by habagat (southwest monsoon) has climbed to 65 from the initial count of 56 barangays.
According to the Iloilo City Emergency Operations Center, around 160–165 millimeters of rainfall were dumped in a span of six hours from from Monday evening, August 17 until early hours of Tuesday, August 18.
While flooding is often recorded in low-lying barangays, other residential areas not normally prone to flood were flooded including private subdivisions.
Some areas even had neck-deep flooding that temporarily displaced residents while there were numerous sightings of reticulated python (locally known as “magkal”).
Of all the districts, Jaro had the most number of barangays affected at 25.
The district of Mandurriao had 16 flooded barangays.
Flooding was also recorded in the districts of Arevalo, City Proper, La Paz, Lapuz, and Molo.
More than 3,200 residents were displaced by the flood. Some are still in evacuation centers.
Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas has urged residents to take precaution as the weather has not cleared yet.
